hunza_lake_crisis

Overview

Water from the formidable Attabad Lake, formed artificially as a result of land sliding in Hunza, has flooded several villages, resulting in a massive displacement in the affected area. Many from around the world for IDP’s has been working to provide relief to the people in the wake of current situation in Hunza and Atabad.
The constantly growing level of water in the lake continues to threaten a large number of calamity-stricken families that are yet to be evacuated to a safer place. So that the government of Pakistan is taking steps to recover the loss in hunza valley and providing relief to all internally displaced people in hunza and attabad.

Current Situation

Current Situation:
The slippage of huge stones in Attaabad Lake’s spillway increases erosion and water discharge whereas boat service will likely restore within few days.

Official sources said outflow from spillway is 7,800 cusecs and inflow is 7,400 cusecs. However, melting glacier increased lake level due to which five more houses submerged in Galmat, tehsil headquarter of Gojal.

Meanwhile, official sources said boat service would resume soon for different areas of tehsil Gojal. Heli service is also operating in the area for the affectees.

How to Donate

As far as aid goes, it should be procured and disbursed transparently to the real victims of Hunza valley and Attabad, burner and other affected areas. The incident happened way back in January but still a threat for the residents. And as far as spending on rehabilitation and reconstruction projects goes, a list of priorities must be established that takes into account the basic needs of the population. With the estimates of the displaced people already topping two million, the task ahead is indeed enormous because; “Reality leaves a lot to the imagination”.
